Itching for a Cure Walk

The first ever walk for eczema, the National Eczema Association’s Itching for a Cure 5K, took place on April 28, 2012 in Asheville, North Carolina, and was a tremendous success!

More than 250 walkers of all ages participated on the beautiful University of North Carolina-Asheville campus. WLOS TV Anchor Tammy Watford was the emcee and did a live broadcast from the event. Mix 96.5 WOXL Radio Morning Show Hosts Tammy & Strickland kept the tunes and the crowd going and also had live broadcasts from the event.

The National Eczema Association is grateful for the efforts of Itching for a Cure

Eczema: Tools for School

Eczema: Tools for School includes comprehensive guides for parents and educators, a series of fact pages covering everything from background information on eczema to strategies for managing eczema in the classroom. Eczema from a Child's Point of View

A thoughtful brochure created by children for children. All the pictures and words in this brochure were collected at a NEA conference where children could express themselves through artwork and answer important questions about how it feels to be affected by eczema.

Coconut Oil?

Q: Have you come across the use of coconut oil for people with eczema, and do you have any positive thoughts on that?

Itching to Know

To my great delight, a new t-shirt came in the mail the other day. Not only is it the bright sunshine yellow I feel drawn to on these gray winter days, but it also represents a new dawning for NEA. The logo on my yellow t will be on our first official t-shirt for our inaugural fund-raising walk, Itching for a Cure, in April 2012.

AD Late in Life

I developed AD late in life after a period of extreme stress. After many courses of varying strengths of prednisone and topical soothers and after learning to manage stress I am pretty free of AD except for some flares in my hands when I do too much with them—cleaning, gardening, etc.

It can be lonely growing up with eczema because it is so hard to talk about, especially when you're a self-conscious teenager. Here's a message to everyone with eczema and those who care about them: you are not alone!

Anecdotal Stories of My Life with Eczema

By way of introduction, I’m 41 years old, and I’ve suffered from eczema, allergies and asthma since I was very young. I really do not remember my life without a drippy nose and bad skin. My asthma, thank goodness, has been relatively controllable my entire life.

How We Struggled to Save our Daughter: A Mother’s Story By Dawn Shover, Milan, Ohio

I am writing this message to all the families who have a child with severe eczema. I am the mother of four daughters ages 21 to 6 years old. Busy house! Our youngest daughter, Carlie, has severe eczema. When she was 2 years old her eczema was getting so bad she would not sleep at night. By age 4 her skin was literally scaling off of her. She would sleep from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. and from 6:00 to 8:00 a.m. She would just begin to sleep and then she would be attacked by the nonstop itch demon. We would spend the night in the rocking chair, and in the morning I would brush up her skin flakes and wash her blood stained pajamas and blanket. Nobody really believed this was our family's life; it was hell for everyone. We had tried everything, yet nothing was working.

Dyshidrotic Dermatitis (aka Hand & Foot Eczema): Facts and Factors

This common eczema, which occurs only on the palms of the hands, sides of the fingers, and soles of the feet, typically causes a burning or itching sensation and a blistering rash. Some patients say the blisters resemble tapioca pudding.

How to Help Your Child with Hand & Foot Eczema

Children with atopic dermatitis (AD) who have eczema on their hands and feet generally have eczema on other parts of the body as well; it is much more common for adults than children with AD to have eczema only on their hands and/or feet.

Latex or Rubber Against Skin

One of the main things I have found for me is that it's important to avoid anything next to my skin made of latex or rubber of any sort.

Dr. Ted Grossbart, a well-known psychologist and Harvard Medical School professor, has made his book Skin Deep: A Mind-Body Program for Healthy Skin available as a free e-book for download.

Triamcinolone Cream

One year in November, I worked for a week in Chicago, and my skin resembled maps: my scars from scratching looked like latitudinal and longitudinal lines! For some reason, after about two days without the use of Triamcinolone cream, the scars faded immediately. Since that time, I use paraben-free and phthalate-free lotions on my skin, and lock in moisture as soon as I get out of the shower.

Aveeno and Cotton Dacron Blends

Water used to make my skin burn, so we would use Aveeno in the bath water, which helped to soften it.
